Virtual Phone Number for SMS Verification

A virtual phone number for SMS is a number you use only to receive a text message, usually a one-time verification code, instead of giving a website your own phone number. At SMS-Act you pick an app and a country, get a one-time number on a carrier SIM card, enter it in the app's sign-up form, and read the code on your order page. This page explains how buying a number works, how the main kinds of "virtual SMS numbers" differ, and where the limits are.

At a glance

  • One-time numbers for receiving a single SMS verification code per order
  • Carrier SIM numbers, not VoIP numbers, so they fall in the mobile line type that sign-up forms expect
  • 160+ countries and 600+ apps; availability changes with stock, so the country list on the order page is the source of truth
  • 8 credits per SMS; each number stays active for 15 minutes
  • No code, no charge: credits are returned to your account automatically

How to buy a virtual phone number for SMS verification

  1. Create an account with your email address.
  2. Add credits through Stripe. Higher top-up tiers include more bonus credits; the current tiers are shown on the top-up page.
  3. Choose the app and the country. Match the country to where the app expects its users, for example a US number for a US-based service.
  4. Copy the number into the app's phone-number field and request the code by SMS.
  5. Read the code on your order page as soon as it arrives, then enter it in the app. The number stays active for 15 minutes.
  6. If nothing arrives, wait about a minute before asking for a resend. If it still does not come, cancel the order and try another country. The credits return to your account automatically, so a failed attempt costs only time.

Types of virtual SMS numbers compared

"Virtual number" covers several different things. What you get depends on the type:

TypeWhat it isTypical useWatch out for
One-time carrier-SIM number (what SMS-Act sells)A mobile-network number used for one verificationCreating or verifying an account onceNot for keeping the number long term
VoIP / app numberAn internet number from a calling or messaging serviceCalls and texts over the internetSome platforms refuse VoIP numbers for verification; see how to tell VoIP from a real SIM
Free public numberA shared number whose inbox anyone can openThrowaway accounts with no sensitive dataMessages are visible to every visitor and the number has often been used on the platform already; see free vs paid platforms
Personal SIM or eSIMA number tied to you, often to an IDLong-term use of one numberNeeds registration and a plan; see SMS platforms vs a personal SIM

For strict platforms the line type is the first thing that decides whether a number is accepted. Several services state in their help pages that they do not accept VoIP numbers. For others, "VoIP numbers are often filtered" is a general industry observation rather than a published rule, so the outcome can change over time.

What is an SMS activation service?

An SMS activation service, also called an SMS verification service or SMS receiving service, supplies numbers so you can receive the text message an app sends when you sign up or log in. The "activation" is the code you type back into the app. Services differ in number type, countries, pricing and how they handle a code that never arrives. When you compare them, check four things:

  • Whether the numbers come from carrier SIM cards or from VoIP services
  • Whether the price is stated per message and whether a failed attempt is charged
  • Whether the rules for unreceived codes are written down
  • Whether the service is open about what it does not do

If you are coming from another SMS activation service, the SMS-Activate alternative guide explains what changed and how to move over.

Which apps and countries can I use?

SMS-Act covers 160+ countries and 600+ apps. Popular guides:

Privacy: what a virtual number does and does not do

A virtual number keeps your personal phone number off the sign-up form, so it is not stored with the app and cannot be used for later marketing calls or texts to you. That is the real privacy benefit.

It does not make you anonymous. You still sign up to SMS-Act with an email address and pay through Stripe, and the app you register on can still see your email, device and IP address. Use virtual numbers for ordinary accounts you are entitled to create, and follow the terms of the app you register on.

What SMS-Act does not do

  • No number rental. Each number is for one verification and lasts 15 minutes. It cannot be kept, extended or reused for later logins.
  • Text messages only. No voice calls and no spoken codes, and you cannot send SMS from the number. If an app offers "call me instead", stay on SMS.
  • No Telegram verification and no mainland China (+86) numbers.
  • No document checks. SMS-Act cannot get around identity verification that requires a passport, ID or bank record.
  • No guarantee. Whether a code arrives depends on the upstream operator route, the app's own risk checks and the steps you follow. Different countries and times of day differ.

Price and credits

Every SMS costs a flat 8 credits, whatever the app. You top up through Stripe; the higher the tier, the more bonus credits you receive, and the tiers on the top-up page are the current ones. If no code arrives, the 8 credits are returned to your account automatically.

Tips when the code does not arrive

  • Choose a number from the country the app expects, and keep your IP and profile region consistent with it.
  • Ask for the code by SMS, not by call.
  • Wait about a minute before a resend; repeated requests can trigger the app's rate limit.
  • Use a fresh number for each attempt. A number the app has already seen can be refused.
  • Cancel the order and try a different country if it still fails. The credits come back automatically.
