About Wise
Wise (formerly TransferWise) was founded in 2011 in London by Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus, and is a global leader in international money transfers and multi-currency finance. According to Wise FY2026 figures (year ended 31 March 2026), the platform had around 18.9 million active customers, up roughly 21% year over year, with about 100,000 new customers joining each week.
Wise is known for the real mid-market exchange rate plus transparent fees, and for a local clearing network that does not rely on SWIFT. It supports holding and exchanging 40+ currencies across 160+ countries and regions. It direct-listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in 2021, and on 11 May 2026 moved its primary listing to the US Nasdaq (ticker WSE), keeping a secondary listing in London (WISE.L), with a market value of roughly GBP 8–9 billion.

Why SMS-Act Cannot Be Used for Wise
The real reason: KYC, not number type
Many users assume that being able to receive the code means they can register — but the real gate for financial platforms is not the SMS step.
As a licensed financial service supervised by the UK FCA and others, Wise is bound by AML frameworks such as FATF, FinCEN, and the EU AMLD, and must verify the account holder's real identity. Its verification is multi-layered:
- Phone verification (first gate) — an SMS OTP at sign-up. Wise flags VoIP / shared-route numbers in its risk controls, US ranges especially, and has never stated it accepts virtual numbers.
- Government-issued photo ID — passport, national ID, or driver's license (the EU / EEA does not accept a driver's license as ID).
- Liveness selfie — you are asked to photograph your face alongside the document for liveness detection.
- Proof of address — a utility bill / bank statement / lease issued within 3 months.
- Video KYC in some regions — countries such as India require a video check.
A virtual number only clears step 1, but steps 2–5 all require your real identity and cannot be bypassed. That is the fundamental reason SMS-Act does not support Wise registration — an honest, compliant boundary, not a service limitation.
Typical Use Cases for International Users
- Freelance income: receive USD / GBP / EUR from US / UK / EU clients into local account details, then convert
- Cross-border e-commerce payouts: collect sales from Etsy / Amazon / Shopify
- Study-abroad and relocation transfers: send tuition, living costs, and deposits at the real rate
- Overseas property purchases: large cross-border transfers (enhanced identity checks required)
- Travel and business trips: spend in local currency with the Wise card at the real rate
Every scenario above assumes you have passed KYC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can SMS-Act receive Wise codes? A: No. Wise requires full real-name KYC; SMS verification only clears the phone step and cannot pass the subsequent ID, liveness, and address checks.
Q: What happens if I register Wise with a virtual number? A: Even if the SMS arrives, you will be rejected at the KYC stage (ID + liveness selfie), and a mismatch between number and identity may lead to account restrictions.
Q: Are there financial-adjacent services that work with SMS verification? A: Services like PayPal and Payoneer work with SMS-Act at the initial SMS step, but still require your own KYC for withdrawals or lending. Bank-type services like Wise and Revolut require your own real-name SIM.
