LINE SMS Verification 2026: Register LINE with a Real Number
Need quick Line verification codes? Start your Line verification journey now
LINE is the dominant messenger in Japan, Thailand and Taiwan, operated by LY Corporation (the entity formed after NAVER and SoftBank merged LINE with Yahoo! Japan). As of March 2025, LINE had about 194 million monthly active users worldwide — roughly 98M in Japan, 54M in Thailand and 22M in Taiwan. Whether you are reaching Japanese or Thai contacts, running a business account, or separating personal and work profiles, the first step is phone number verification.
This guide is based on a June 2026 review of LINE's official Help Center and explains the key 2026 registration changes, plus how to complete LINE SMS verification reliably using SMS-Act's real carrier numbers.

Read first: two rules that decide whether LINE SMS works in 2026
- Phone signup is limited to 5 regions. LINE's Help Center states that creating a new account by phone number is available only in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Since LINE 13.11.0, everywhere else uses Continue with Apple / Continue with Google. Choose a number from one of these five regions.
- LINE bans virtual numbers. The official wording is that numbers starting with 050 and virtual phone numbers cannot be used — you must use a number from a mobile service provider. Most VoIP code services get rejected, which is exactly why SMS-Act provides real carrier SIMs.
1. LINE registration requirements & key 2026 changes
Phone signup is available in only 5 regions
This is the easiest thing to get wrong in 2026. LINE's Help Center is explicit: only users in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan or Thailand can create an account by verifying a phone number via text or call. Everyone else — the US, Europe, Indonesia, the rest of Southeast Asia — can no longer register a new account with a phone number since LINE 13.11.0, and instead taps "Continue with Apple" or "Continue with Google".
Practical takeaway: for SMS registration, pick a number from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea or Hong Kong — not just whatever country looks cheapest.
LINE blocks virtual / 050 numbers
LINE has hard requirements on the number type:
- ❌ Numbers starting with 050 (Japanese IP-phone range)
- ❌ Virtual numbers / VoIP (internet calling)
- ❌ Landlines, data-only SIMs (no SMS), Wi-Fi-only devices cannot receive the code
- ✅ You must use a real number from a mobile carrier
This is the root cause of most failed LINE registrations: many code services hand out VoIP numbers that LINE detects and blocks before the SMS is even sent.
One number, one account — re-use deletes the original
LINE enforces one number per account. Registering with a number already tied to another LINE account deletes that original account. For multi-account setups, every account needs its own real number.
2. Why use SMS-Act for LINE
Once the two hard rules above are clear, the fit is obvious:
- ✅ Real carrier SIMs, not VoIP — matches LINE's "must be a mobile carrier number" rule, so it clears LINE's checks far more often than VoIP services or Google Voice.
- ✅ Covers all 5 LINE-eligible regions — Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea and Hong Kong, plus 160+ countries for other platforms.
- ✅ Flat 8 credits per attempt — same price for every region, so you choose by success rate and speed, not price.
- ✅ Auto-refund on failure — if no code arrives, the 8 credits return to your balance and you retry another region. No minimum threshold.
- ✅ ~20–60 seconds delivery — Japanese numbers average around 20 seconds in testing.
An honest note
No code service can guarantee 100% success on LINE. LINE runs number-recycle detection and risk scoring; a real SIM is more likely to pass, not guaranteed. Treat "auto-refund + retry with another number" as part of the normal flow.
3. LINE pass rates by region (Q1 2026)
Recent SMS-Act results for registering LINE with real carrier numbers. Every region is a flat 8 credits — choose by pass rate and purpose:
| Region | Code | Pass rate | Avg. delivery | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | +81 | ~95% | ~20s | LINE's biggest market; LINE Pay needs a JP number + ID |
| Taiwan | +886 | ~93% | ~25s | 90% penetration; most stable overseas choice |
| Thailand | +66 | ~93% | ~25s | #1 messenger in Thailand; great value |
| Korea | +82 | ~90% | ~30s | Supported by LINE, though KakaoTalk dominates locally |
| Hong Kong | +852 | ~88% | ~30s | Tighter recycle limits; fallback option |
Since pricing is uniform, Japan or Taiwan numbers are the safest default; pick Thailand if you target Thai local services.
4. Step-by-step: register LINE with SMS-Act
Step 1 — Create & top up your SMS-Act account (~2 min)
- Go to SMS-Act, sign up with email + password and verify.
- Top up via Stripe; load at least 2–3 attempts' worth (16–24 credits) so you can retry.
Step 2 — Select the LINE service & region (~1 min)
- Search LINE in the service box.
- Pick your target region (Japan / Taiwan / Thailand / Korea / Hong Kong).
- Get the number — 8 credits are deducted and a real carrier number (valid ~15 min) is assigned.
Step 3 — Enter the number in LINE (~1 min)
- Open LINE and tap "Sign up" / "Create new account".
- Select the matching country code (e.g. Japan +81) so it isn't auto-detected wrong.
- Enter the SMS-Act number (drop the country prefix, remove spaces).
Step 4 — Receive & enter the code (30s–3 min)
- Return to SMS-Act and refresh to read the code.
- Copy the digits and paste them into LINE.
- No code after 3 minutes? Cancel the number → credits auto-refund → get a new number in another region.
If SMS won't arrive, LINE usually offers "Call me instead", reading the code aloud via an automated call — a useful fallback.
Step 5 — ⚠️ Most important: lock down the account immediately (~2 min)
The temporary number will be recycled, so right after registering:
- Set a password (Settings → Account).
- Add an email address (for recovery / transfer).
- Turn on Account transfer and set the 6-digit backup PIN (Settings → Account → Account transfer).
- Optional: link an Apple / Google account as an extra recovery path.
After this, even when the temporary number is recycled and handed to someone else, you keep the account via email + password + PIN. Skipping this step is the #1 reason code-service users lose accounts.
5. Code not arriving? Causes & fixes
LINE doesn't show a specific error code, so diagnose by symptom:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Code sent" but nothing arrives | Number was recently used to register (recycle check) | Cancel and get a fresh number |
| "This phone number can't be used" | Flagged as VoIP / 050 / public-pool number | Switch to a carrier number in another region |
| "Incorrect verification code" | Code expired | Tap "resend" while the number is still valid |
| "Please try again later" | Too many attempts from the same IP/device (rate limit) | Wait 30 min, change network IP, retry |
| "SMS verification isn't available in your country" | You chose a number outside the 5 regions | Use a Japan / Taiwan / Thailand / Korea / Hong Kong number |
6. Multiple accounts & number recycling
- One number per account — each LINE account needs its own real number; with SMS-Act you can grab several region numbers at once and register them separately.
- Typical split — Japan number for the main account, Taiwan/Thailand for secondaries; keep personal and business strictly apart.
- Numbers are recycled — SMS-Act provides one-time temporary numbers (~15 min). It does not offer rental, fixed, or monthly dedicated numbers. Keeping an account long-term relies on the email + password + transfer PIN you set after registering, not on holding the number.
- Account transfer — LINE's easy-transfer QR code + 6-digit backup PIN restores the last 14 days of chats when you change phones; requires LINE 12.10 or later.
7. Simple, transparent pricing
- Flat price — 8 credits per attempt for all LINE regions; Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea and Hong Kong cost the same.
- Failure protection — if the code never arrives, the 8 credits return to your balance automatically, with no minimum threshold.
- Payment — Stripe.
- Strategy — with uniform pricing, focus on the region with the best pass rate and speed rather than comparing prices.
SMS-Act service boundaries
SMS-Act provides one-time temporary numbers only. It does not support Telegram, and does not offer China-mainland numbers or China-mainland-only apps (WeChat, QQ, Alipay, etc.). Follow LINE's Terms of Service and your local laws. Temporary numbers are for initial verification and privacy; bind durable credentials to any important account.
8. FAQ
Q1: Can I still register LINE by SMS in 2026? Yes, but only with numbers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or Hong Kong; elsewhere LINE has switched to Apple/Google sign-up.
Q2: Why do virtual numbers keep failing? LINE forbids 050 and virtual numbers and requires a real carrier number. VoIP codes are blocked before sending. SMS-Act uses real SIMs, so the pass rate is higher.
Q3: Do I need ID verification after registering? Basic chat and calls don't; LINE Pay and similar do require identity plus a local number (e.g. Japan Pay needs a JP number + documents). SMS-Act cannot complete KYC for you.
Q4: Any limits on a LINE account made with an overseas number? The account region is fixed by the number's origin; some regional stickers and LINE Pay currencies/features are limited. Plain chat and international contact are unaffected.
Q5: Can I rent a long-term LINE number from SMS-Act? No. SMS-Act offers one-time temporary numbers only. Long-term retention comes from setting email, password and a transfer PIN right after registering.
