You don't need a phone number to create a Razer ID. Sign-up takes an email (or a Facebook, Google or Twitch login), and Razer sends its one-time passwords to that email by default. SMS comes in later in two places: when you choose Text Message as your two-step verification method, and when Razer Gold wallet actions (reloads, spending Gold, redeeming Silver) ask you to confirm by phone. Both keep sending codes to the same number, so it matters which number you give. A temporary number is fine for a one-off phone confirmation. It's a bad choice for anything Razer will text you again.
Razer in one paragraph
Razer was founded in 2005 by Min-Liang Tan, who is still chairman and CEO, and Robert Krakoff. It has headquarters in Singapore (one-north) and Irvine, California. The pattern is the same as most accounts that hold money: codes follow the account, not the session. Whatever number you register is where the next code will go, whether that's next week or next year.
Where a temporary number makes sense
- A one-off phone confirmation on an account where your email or an authenticator app remains the ongoing method.
- A secondary or test Razer ID, for example a developer or reviewer testing a Razer Gold checkout, where losing the account later doesn't matter.
- Keeping your personal number off a gaming account when Razer only needs a phone once, and you've already set up an authenticator app as 2FA.
And where it doesn't:
- Text Message 2FA on your main Razer ID. The next login code goes to a number you no longer control.
- A wallet holding meaningful Razer Gold. If a risk check sends a code you can't receive, you'll have to go through Razer Support to recover a funded account.
- Getting around KYC, region locks or a ban. None of these depend on the phone number.
Two-step verification: follow Razer's own advice
Razer's guidance recommends an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy or Duo Mobile) over Text Message. It's more reliable and works without mobile signal. SMS 2FA is still available, but it's the weaker choice, especially for anyone thinking of using a temporary number.
When you turn on 2FA, Razer generates 10 backup codes. Write them down or store them in a password manager. If your phone or number is gone, those codes are the quickest way back in.
Razer Gold: region lock and "Failed to reload"
Razer Gold wallets are region-specific. A PIN or reload method has to be in the same currency as your wallet (USD, EUR, SGD or a local currency, depending on where the account was set up). If it isn't, the reload fails with "Failed to reload". This is the error people run into most often, and a phone number has nothing to do with it:
- Buy PINs from sellers in your own wallet region. Stores such as OffGamers show the region on each Razer Gold card.
- Don't change the account region to match a cheap PIN. A wallet that holds a balance can't be moved freely, and the attempt can trigger a review.
- If the reload asks for a phone check and a reCAPTCHA, complete both in the same session. Codes expire quickly.
Razer Gold ID verification: the hard limit
When a Razer Gold balance or transaction reaches a certain level, Razer asks for ID verification: a valid identity document and an address. Review is targeted within about 24 hours. Razer doesn't publish the threshold. This is a real identity check. A virtual number can't replace it, and nobody honest will tell you otherwise. If you plan to keep a significant balance, use your own details from the start.
Step by step: a one-off phone confirmation with SMS-Act
- Set up an authenticator app as 2FA first (Razer ID → Security → two-step verification) and save the backup codes.

- Search for Razer in the service list, choose a country from the list, and get the number. The order stays open for 15 minutes. Stock varies by country, so pick from what's listed when you order. For wallet actions, a number from your Razer account's region is the most consistent choice.
- On the Razer page asking for a phone, choose the right country code, enter the number and request an SMS. Don't choose a voice call; SMS-Act numbers only receive text messages.
- Copy the code from your SMS-Act order and enter it on Razer.
- Check your account settings: the ongoing OTP method should be email or your authenticator app, not the temporary number.
If no code arrives, cancel the order. The 8 credits are returned to your account automatically. Try another number, or request the code once more on Razer before changing anything.

Scams to ignore
- "Send a photo of your Razer Gold PIN to verify": nobody legitimate needs your PIN. Whoever has the PIN has the money.
- Fake "Razer reward" or "account locked" emails: trust only razer.com and gold.razer.com.
- "Share your OTP to receive a gift": an OTP authorises something on your account. Never pass it on.

Should I set Razer SMS two-factor authentication to a temporary number?
No. Two-step codes keep going to the same number for every future login, and an SMS-Act number is a one-time temporary number with a 15-minute window. If you point 2FA at it, you will not receive the next code. Razer itself recommends an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy or Duo Mobile, and gives you backup codes when you enable 2FA. Use a temporary number only for a one-off phone confirmation.
Why does my Razer Gold reload say Failed to reload?
Usually because the Razer Gold PIN or reload method is for a different region or currency than your Razer Gold wallet. Razer Gold wallets are region-specific, and the PIN currency has to match the account currency. A new phone number does not change this. Buy PINs for your own wallet region.
Can a phone number get me past Razer Gold ID verification?
