Quick answer — as of October 2026

  • Does SMS-Act have US numbers? Yes, one-time US +1 numbers.
  • Number type: physical carrier SIM lines, not VoIP. SMS-Act has offered no VoIP US option since 2024.
  • Price: a flat 8 credits per attempt, the same as every other country and service.
  • Valid for: about 15 minutes, one code, one service. No rental, no keeping the number.
  • If no code arrives: cancel the order and the 8 credits go back to your account automatically.
  • Most-ordered services on US numbers: Google / Gmail / YouTube, Apple, Amazon, TikTok, Instagram, Discord, Cursor, Facebook.
  • What it can't do: US banking and payment apps (SSN / bank KYC), document or selfie checks, and later login or recovery codes.

Why "real SIM, not VoIP" is the part that matters

Most free and cheap US numbers are VoIP numbers — Google Voice, TextNow, or app-generated lines. Many services look up the line type before they send a code, and they quietly refuse VoIP. OpenAI, Microsoft, Discord, Twitch, Lyft, OfferUp and Poshmark all publicly say they don't accept VoIP numbers for verification. When that happens, the code never arrives, and nothing tells you why.

SMS-Act's US numbers are physical-SIM mobile lines. A line-type lookup returns an ordinary mobile subscriber, so you're past that first filter. Whether a code then arrives still depends on the upstream carrier route at that moment and on the target service's own risk checks. That's why a failed attempt costs you only time — the credits come back.

When a one-time US number makes sense

  • You live outside the US and an app or website only accepts US numbers for sign-up.
  • You want to keep your own number private on a US marketplace, forum, or trial account.
  • You're testing an SMS / OTP flow and need a real US mobile line, not a VoIP stand-in.

Where US numbers get used most

The table below lists services by SMS-Act order volume on US numbers (July–October 2026) and shows the step where each one asks for a phone number. Whether the number is required at sign-up or only requested later decides whether you need a code at all.

Google / Gmail / YouTubeAt sign-up, or when a risk check is triggered—

US services that officially reject VoIP

Each of these services says in its help center or official documentation that VoIP numbers aren't accepted. With a Google Voice or TextNow number, the usual result is an "invalid number" error or a code that never shows up.

  • OpenAI: VoIP, Google Voice, landline and premium-rate numbers aren't supported. The number has to come from a country or region OpenAI supports.
  • Microsoft: in Microsoft's words, "VOIP numbers cannot be added as a way to sign in or get verification codes". One phone number can be linked to only one Microsoft account.
  • Discord: the number must be a mobile number; VoIP, disposable and landline numbers get an "invalid phone number" error.
  • Twitch: Twitch's blog explains that VoIP numbers are easy to abuse, and the help center says landlines don't work either. One phone number can verify up to 5 accounts, and if one of them gets a sitewide ban, the other accounts on that number are banned with it.
  • OfferUp: only US mobile numbers are supported; VoIP, Google Voice, landline and temporary numbers are not. OfferUp is US-only, and TruYou identity verification also asks for a photo ID and a selfie.
  • Poshmark: the help center says VoIP numbers can't be verified. Poshmark currently operates only in the US and Canada.
  • Lyft: the change-number page says VoIP numbers aren't compatible with the Lyft platform (another Lyft page says some VoIP carriers are supported, so the two official pages don't agree). The number must be from the US, Canada or Puerto Rico, and riders also need to pass a selfie check.
  • Ticketmaster: pay phones, pagers, Google Voice and VoIP numbers aren't accepted. You have to verify both your email and your phone before the account is created, and buying on the US or Canadian site requires a local billing address.

Walmart adds a different rule: a phone number that was used for verification in the past 45 days can't be used to create a new account (see Walmart SMS verification). In practice you need a fresh number for every new account on the same service, which is exactly how SMS-Act works: one number per order.

What these platforms block is the VoIP category, and SMS-Act's US numbers are physical-SIM lines, so they aren't in it. That only gets you past the number-type check, though. Whether the code actually arrives still depends on the carrier route at that moment and on the platform's own risk checks.

  1. Sign in at sms-act.net/activate and top up through Stripe. Larger top-ups come with more bonus credits; see the top-up page for current amounts.
  2. Choose the service you're verifying, then choose United States as the country.
  3. Copy the +1 number and enter it on the target site with United States selected as the country code.
  4. Request the code by text message. SMS-Act numbers only receive SMS; if you choose "call me", the code won't arrive.
  5. The code appears on your order page when it's delivered. If nothing arrives, wait about a minute and request a resend once. If there's still nothing, cancel and order a new number — the 8 credits come back each time.

How to format a US number

  • A US number is +1 followed by 10 digits: a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number, for example +1 212 555 0123 (an example number).
  • Canada and parts of the Caribbean also use +1. In the site's country dropdown, pick United States, not Canada.
  • If the site has already filled in +1, type only the 10 digits. Don't add another 1 or +1 in front, or the site will reject the number as badly formatted.
  • The area code reflects where the number was originally registered. SMS-Act numbers can't be picked by state or area code, and most services only check that it's a valid US mobile number.

If the code doesn't arrive

  • Resend only once. Repeated resends often trigger the target site's rate limit.
  • Change the number, not the settings. A different US number takes a different route. Cancel — the credits return automatically — then order again.
  • Try another country if the service allows it. If the service doesn't require a US number, a UK or Hong Kong number is often worth a try.
  • Check what the site is actually asking for. If it wants a document, a selfie or an SSN after the SMS step, a different number won't change the outcome.

Can you sign up for Google Voice with an SMS-Act US number?

Not directly. Google Voice is itself a VoIP service. To sign up, you first have to verify a US mobile number, and Google rejects virtual numbers at that step. Since January 30, 2026, new Google Voice numbers also require you to submit your legal name, a government ID and a home address and complete identity verification before you can use them. A one-time temporary number can't get through either check.

If you already have a Google Voice number, keep in mind it can be reclaimed after 3 months of inactivity, with a 45-day window to recover it afterwards. For the sign-up process and how to keep your number, see the Google Voice registration guide and the Google Voice keep-your-number guide.

After you sign up: don't leave a one-time number as your only way back in

A one-time number stops working after about 15 minutes, so any later login or recovery code sent to it won't reach you. Right after you create the account, do three things:

  1. Add an email address you'll keep using as your main recovery option.
  2. Switch two-step verification to an authenticator app or a passkey instead of relying on SMS. Microsoft is one example: it has announced it's phasing out SMS codes for personal accounts in favor of passkeys and Microsoft Authenticator.
  3. Move important accounts to a phone number in your own name, as long as the service lets you add a number from your country.

FAQ

Does SMS-Act have US phone numbers?

Yes. As of October 2026 SMS-Act offers one-time US +1 numbers on physical carrier SIM lines, not VoIP. Each attempt costs 8 credits, the number is valid for about 15 minutes, and the credits go back to your account automatically if no code arrives.

Are SMS-Act US numbers VoIP numbers like Google Voice or TextNow?

No. SMS-Act's US numbers are physical-SIM mobile lines. Services that check the line type and reject VoIP, such as those that refuse Google Voice or TextNow numbers, see an ordinary mobile subscriber line instead.

Can I use a US number from SMS-Act for Venmo, Cash App or a US bank?

No. US payment apps and banks require a Social Security Number, a US bank account and identity checks. A temporary number cannot pass those checks, and a one-time number cannot receive the later security codes such accounts send.

Can I keep the US number or receive codes on it later?

No. SMS-Act numbers are one-time and valid for about 15 minutes. SMS-Act does not rent numbers, so use a SIM registered to you for any account you need to recover later.

Can I choose a US state or area code?

No. The number is assigned from the US pool available at order time; state and area code cannot be selected. Most services only check that the number is a valid US mobile line, not which state it belongs to.

Can I sign up for Google Voice with an SMS-Act US number?

No. Google Voice asks you to verify a US mobile number at sign-up and rejects virtual numbers, and since January 30, 2026 new Google Voice numbers also require identity verification. A one-time temporary number cannot get through those checks.

How do I enter a US number on a website?

Select United States (+1) as the country, then type only the 10 digits: the 3-digit area code plus the 7-digit number, without an extra leading 1. Canada also uses +1, so make sure you pick the right country.
